Pioneering Material Solutions

Sustainability at Jokasafe

Jokasafe is the first protective glove manufacturer to calculate product-specific CO₂ emissions and to use exclusively BIOVYN™ — a material refined from renewable or recycled raw materials — in its manufacturing process. These efforts are guided by the company’s Low-Carbon INSIDE™ program.

CO₂ Calculations for Protective Gloves

Jokasafe is the first protective glove manufacturer in the world to calculate carbon dioxide emissions per glove pair for all protective gloves manufactured in Finland. The calculation and reporting were carried out in accordance with the ISO 14067 standard and the GHG Protocol Product Standard. This calculation confirmed our company’s position as the world’s leading protective glove manufacturer in delivering concrete CO₂ emission reductions.

The key finding of the CO₂ emissions calculation is that the carbon footprint of a protective glove is primarily determined by material selection. Other emission sources, such as energy use or manufacturing waste, play a comparatively smaller role.

Comparative calculations confirmed that Jokasafe protective gloves have a notably low carbon footprint. The BIOVYN™ material used in our coatings generates more than 10 times lower emissions than conventional, fossil-based materials. This calculation also gives us deep insight into the measures and materials that allow us to continue directing product development toward even lower-emission glove models.

Our Driving Force: Low-Carbon INSIDE™

Low-Carbon INSIDE™ is an action program through which we identify opportunities to reduce CO₂ emissions, set targets, and implement concrete measures to achieve our emission reduction goals.

The Low-Carbon INSIDE™ program serves as an umbrella framework encompassing continuous product development, informed material selection, logistics chains, and energy management solutions in production — all playing central roles.

Low-Carbon INSIDE™ is a commitment to continuous improvement and a cleaner environment for everyone.

Next-Generation PVC Coating

Awareness and concern about the environmental impact of PVC and plastics have grown significantly in recent years. However, plastic plays essential roles and is not easily replaceable. From a workplace safety perspective, PVC-coated gloves provide effective protection against numerous harmful and hazardous chemicals. Plastic is also a remarkably durable material. From a lifecycle perspective, the durability and usability of plastic reduce its environmental impact relative to many other, seemingly more eco-friendly materials.

Recent developments, however, are transformative. It is now possible to manufacture plastic products with a fraction of the previous CO₂ emissions. BIOVYN™ is a key raw material for PVC that enables a decisive reduction in a product’s carbon footprint compared to earlier alternatives.

We have always produced all our coating compounds in-house, and today we do so with over 65 years of experience. Sustainable development is now a core part of our story, and we have chosen to combine decades of coating expertise with the best materials available. That is why we use only next-generation BIOVYN™ material as the primary raw material in the PVC coatings of our protective gloves.

Ask how other manufacturers produce their gloves and which coating materials they use.

With Jokasafe, it’s always: JOKASAFE LOW-CARBON BIOVYN™-BASED PVC

What Is BIOVYN™?

BIOVYN™ is a fossil-free primary raw material for PVC, refined from renewable or recycled sources. BIOVYN™ can be produced from materials such as tall oil, extracted from side streams of the Finnish forest industry’s wood processing — in other words, waste wood. This environmentally responsible production model is central to its value.

BIOVYN™ is a high-quality material that fully matches the performance characteristics of conventional, fossil-based PVC products.

In Jokasafe products, BIOVYN™ delivers excellent protection against chemicals, mechanical abrasion, and extreme conditions.
